FROM CAROL
News
from Carol The fair is over, the displays are packed away and the
food stands have moved on. I even heard that the butter cow is being
converted to diesel fuel. The fair was visited by more people than
ever before, a fact that we can attest to after sitting in the
traffic lineup for a loooong time. You can see in this photo that
even we old folks can enjoy the rides, however tame our choice may
be. I got a great note from a couple who went with us, who enjoyed
the fair but had some good ideas to make it even better in the
future.

We just had our document party for the four who are going on the
Northern National Parks trip, leaving about the time you get this
newsletter. I wish I were going with them as they explore these
wonderful parks. I always hope that each of our trips will have wide
appeal, but since I cannot predict that, we strive to offer you an
alternative if there will not be a large group. Your safety and fun
are important to us and we will always keep that in mind.
School is back in session. I’ve enjoyed watching the eager
young kids walking to school with their parents. Cornell students
are back, at work and at play. The lazy days of summer are passing
for another year.
See news on Dick Peters’ programs on the reverse. They begin
October 2, 7:00, in Mount Vernon Bank’s meeting room.
Fall
Trip
October
15, 2008
Mid
October is the time for fall colors in Iowa and so we are setting
out on our Fall Trip on the 15th. In an earlier newsletter I told
you that we will be dining at Breitbach’s in Balltown, so that
will give you an idea of the direction we’ll be traveling.

The rest of the trip will be a MYSTERY. With all the interesting
stops plus the noon meal, the price of this trip is only $75 per
person. Remember the good old days when we could do a day trip for
half that price?
Bank
Stability and FDIC
How can you be sure that
your money is safe in Mount Vernon Bank and Trust Company? Our bank’s
history as a strong community bank speaks to its basic
dependability, but you are also covered by FDIC insurance for at
least the first $100,000 you have on deposit. Often you can be
covered for much more depending on how your accounts are structured,
a situation our Customer Service Representatives can help you
with.
To read more about how FDIC insurance works, we have a couple
booklets available from the tellers that will assist you. Or you may
log onto the FDIC website which is a great resource. www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/news/cnsum08
Historically, Mount Vernon Bank has been here since 1884, one of
the oldest institutions in Linn County. As we approach 125 years, we
plan to continue to serve you far into the future.
Northern
National Parks
Departing
Sept. 4
Heading off to cooler,
drier air and beautiful scenery, our Northern National Parks group
will follow this itinerary: Salt Lake City for two days, Idaho Falls
for five nights with tours out to Crater of the Moon National Park,
Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole, then a return to
Salt Lake City for a return flight. So watch our next newsletter for
photos from the west.
Southern
Caribbean Cruise
Early
February
Make
your choice! It may be lovely in eastern Iowa now, but the situation
will be different in February. We have a group of 17 signed up as of
August 1. Prices may have gone up a little since, but you may still
have a chance to sign up, depending on room availability from Royal
Caribbean. We want you to join us, so act soon.
Washington

October
23 through 28
Pre-Travel
Meeting, 10/04
If
you are among the fortunate ones who have a space on this trip, you
will want to be here at the bank on October 4 at 10:30. At that
time, we will be having a pretrip meeting to go over the details of
our trip. This will be an informal time in our meeting room and will
last less than an hour. Of course, refreshments will be
served!
Dick
Peters, Oct. 2, 9, 16
“The
Story of Black Soldiers in the Army of the West, 1866-1890”
Six regiments of black
soldiers were authorized by Congress in 1866. We will examine the
service of these soldiers---4 regiments of infantry and 2 regiments
of cavalry---as they served in the most remote outposts of the 19th
century West.
Dick Peters, retired from Cornell and Mount Vernon High School,
is a teacher extraordinaire. His vast knowledge from years of study
combined with intense research on this topic will make this a
fascinating series. Each session will begin at 7:00 PM in the Bank
Meeting Room.
Session 1: Establishment of the black regiments, the
reorganization of the 4 infantry regiments, arguments for and
against segregated units, acquisition of the nickname “Buffalo
Soldiers”.
Session 2: The black infantry on the Texas, New Mexico and
Oklahoma frontiers. The weather, the poor living quarters, and the
wars.
Session 3: The 9th and 10th cavalry units and the northern Plains
Indian wars.
Scenes
from the Fair
Many thanks to the
Lehmans who shared their photos with us. I think our group covered
all the basic food groups: corn dogs, fried cheese curds, fried
everything, ice cream, and perhaps even margaritas.
