Constructed in 1891, this is the first Mount Vernon Bank and Trust Company building, located at 107 First Street West.

One hundred and twenty-four years ago, Mount Vernon Bank & Trust Company accepted its first deposit-a $5 Gold Piece. Clara Brackett, who lived in the house now known as "Brackett House" on Cornell’s campus, received Certificate #1.

Thus began 124 years of continuous banking services to the communities of Mount Vernon and Lisbon and the surrounding area.

Since that time, the bank has grown with the area, with local ownership, with the support of community members, and with the many projects that have made our community the solid one it is today.

 

For 124 years, children have saved their coins, young couples have saved and borrowed for their homes and their children’s education, businesses and farms have flourished with the support of Mount Vernon Bank and Trust Company. Local institutions have grown with the bank’s cooperation.

The Mount Vernon landscape would look quite different today without the growth facilitated by Mount Vernon Bank and Trust Company.

This building, located at 206 First Street West, was constructed in 1963. The drive-up facility located near Third Avenue South was added in 1980.

 

 

 

The only interruption in the bank’s service was during the depths of the depression at the time of the federally decreed bank holiday which closed all banks in the nation. Because of its strong financial condition at that time, Mount Vernon Bank and Trust Company was permitted to reopen within a week of the start of that bank holiday.

A list of the names of the persons associated with the bank in the early years mirrors the names cited in the Mount Vernon Centennial book. William Smith and Dr. James Carson started the bank, Colonel H. H. Rood and W. C. Stuckslager, D. L. Boyd, and Charles Hartung were all involved in the ownership and management of the bank in the early years.
The present day Bank building remains at 206 First Street West. The Bank was extensively enlarged and remodeled to better serve its growing customer base and the local community in 1991.
